AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what changed and what's a new acronym

§3 Everywhere seoaeoai search 4 min read

Short answer: SEO is about ranking in search results so people click. AEO is about being used as the answer. GEO is about being cited by generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. AEO and GEO mean nearly the same thing today, and both sit on top of ordinary SEO. Most of the work overlaps, but a few things have changed for real, mainly how success gets measured.

AEO is the older of the two new terms. It came from the featured snippet and voice assistant days and was picked up again when AI answers arrived. GEO was named in a 2023 research paper from Princeton and IIT Delhi, published at KDD 2024. Since then, agencies and tool vendors have used whichever acronym their buyers search for, which is part of why this question exists.

What’s the same

The basics haven’t changed. Google’s own guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode says there are “no additional requirements” and no “special optimizations necessary.” A page has to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to be used as a supporting link. Google’s Gary Illyes said the same thing at a Search Central event in July 2025: normal SEO is what gets you into AI Overviews.

So the foundations still apply:

  • Pages that crawlers can reach and read without running heavy JavaScript.
  • Clear titles, headings and descriptions.
  • Content that answers a specific question better than the other results.
  • Other reputable sites linking to and mentioning you.

If a team calls itself an “AEO agency” and skips these, it’s selling the paint without the wall.

What changed

1. A ranking is worth fewer clicks. Pew Research tracked 900 US adults’ Google searches in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a regular result on 8% of visits, compared with 15% when there was no summary. Only about 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary. You can rank well and still get less traffic than you would have a few years ago.

2. Mentions count, even without a click. In AI answers, being named (“tools like X and Y”) or cited as a source shapes what buyers think, even if they never visit your site. That’s a new metric for most marketing teams, and it’s harder to track than traffic.

3. The format of the page matters more. The GEO paper tested ways of rewriting content and found that adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics increased a source’s visibility in AI answers by over 40% across various queries. Keyword stuffing lowered visibility. AI tools seem to favor content that’s easy to quote: a direct answer near the top, specific facts, and named sources.

4. There are more places to show up. ChatGPT reported 900 million weekly active users in February 2026. Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude each pull from the web differently, and Bing’s index feeds several of them. Bing Webmaster Tools now has an AI Performance report that shows when Copilot cites your pages.

What’s mostly rebranding

  • llms.txt files. This is a proposed file that lists a site’s content for AI tools. Google’s Gary Illyes said in July 2025 that Google doesn’t support it and isn’t planning to, and Google’s documentation says you don’t need new “AI text files” to appear in its AI features. (dumbGTM has one anyway. It took ten minutes and costs nothing, but we’re not expecting miracles from it.)
  • “AI-specific” schema markup. Structured data still helps search engines understand a page, but Google says there’s no special schema needed for AI features.
  • Separate AEO and GEO strategies. For most companies, one content plan that answers real questions clearly covers all three acronyms.

What to do about it

  1. Keep doing SEO basics. Indexable pages, good titles, useful content and links from other sites.
  2. Answer the question in the first two sentences of every page that targets a question. That’s the part that gets quoted.
  3. Add sources, numbers and quotes where you have them, and link to where they came from.
  4. Get mentioned in places AI tools read, like industry publications, review sites and community discussions, by being useful there.
  5. Track AI visibility on a short list of questions. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google the 20 questions your buyers ask, once a month, and note whether you’re mentioned. Also watch referral traffic from AI domains in your analytics.

So the three acronyms share one foundation. What really changed is that being the answer now matters more than being the link, and you’ll need to measure both.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO, SEO and GEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) is about ranking pages in search results so people click through. AEO (answer engine optimization) is about having your content used as the direct answer, originally in featured snippets and voice assistants and now in AI answers. GEO (generative engine optimization) is about being cited or mentioned in responses from generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. In practice AEO and GEO are used almost interchangeably, and both build on the same foundations as SEO.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond normal SEO best practices, and a page has to be indexed and eligible for a snippet to be used. What is changing is how much traffic a ranking brings: Pew Research found users clicked a result link on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it did not.

Do I need an llms.txt file for AEO or GEO?

It is optional. Google's Gary Illyes said in July 2025 that Google does not support llms.txt and isn't planning to, and Google's own documentation says you don't need new machine-readable or AI text files to appear in its AI features. It costs very little to add one, but don't expect it to change your visibility.

How do you measure AEO or GEO?

Track how often your brand or pages are mentioned and cited in AI answers for the questions you care about, either by checking a fixed list of prompts by hand each month or with an AI visibility tool. Also watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and similar domains in your analytics, and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report for Copilot citations.

What content gets cited by AI search engines?

Research on generative engines found that adding citations, quotations from relevant sources and statistics increased a source's visibility in AI answers by over 40% across various queries, while keyword stuffing made it worse. In practice that means clear, direct answers near the top of the page, specific facts with sources, and content that is easy to quote.
