RE:
Stage 2 of 4: Working

Does cold calling still work in 2026?

§2 Working outboundcold calling 4 min read

Short answer: yes. Cold calling still works for B2B sales in 2026, and it may work better now than it did a few years ago, because so many teams moved their outbound to email and AI tools. The catch is the math. You should expect a few hundred dials for each meeting you book, so it only pays off if a meeting is worth a lot to you and someone on your team can handle being hung up on.

What the numbers say

Most cold calling data comes from companies that sell calling tools, phone data or calling services. That doesn’t make it wrong, but it’s worth knowing who’s counting.

SourceWhat they measuredResult
Cognism, 2026200,000+ calls; “success rate” by Cognism’s definition2.7% average success rate (up from 2.3% in 2025)
Belkins, 2025 data175,000+ dials9.9% of dials connect; 4.6% of conversations become meetings; ~370 dials per meeting
Gong Labs, 201890,380 connected calls~1.48% ended in a held meeting
RAIN GroupBuyer survey82% of buyers say they accept meetings with sellers who reach out

These studies measure different things, so they don’t line up neatly. A rough way to read them together: about 1 in 10 dials reaches a person, a small share of those conversations turn into meetings, and a meeting takes somewhere between 200 and 400 dials. Cognism also found it took 1.55 attempts on average to reach a prospect in 2026, down from 2.9 the year before.

For comparison, the average cold email reply rate on Instantly’s platform was 3.43% in 2025 data. Replies are cheaper to get than phone conversations, but a reply is often “not interested” or “remove me,” and a phone conversation is a real exchange with a person.

Why it works again

Cold calling is a good example of the dumb idea loop running a second lap. For years, “cold calling is dead” was a popular take, and a lot of teams moved their outbound to email sequences. Then email filled up with automated sequences, and later with AI-written ones. Most buyers now get a lot more cold email than cold calls, so a call from a person who did a bit of homework stands out more than it used to.

That puts cold calling back in the Working stage for now. It works partly because fewer people are doing it, which also means it won’t stay this way forever. AI calling tools are already appearing, and if they get cheap enough, phones will fill up the same way inboxes did.

When cold calling is worth it

  • Your deal size can pay for the dials. If a rep makes 60 to 80 dials a day and books a meeting every 300 or so, that’s roughly one meeting every four or five days per rep. That works for a $30,000 contract. It’s hard to justify for a $50 a month product.
  • You sell to people who are at a desk. Roles like IT, finance, operations and small business owners are usually easier to reach by phone than people who spend the day in meetings or on site.
  • You can say why you’re calling in one sentence. Gong’s analysis found successful calls opened with a clear reason for the call. If you can’t explain why this person should talk to you, the phone just gets you rejected faster.
  • You pair it with email. RAIN Group’s research found it takes an average of 8 touches to get a meeting. A call after an email (“I sent you a note on Tuesday about…”) gives the person context.

When it isn’t

  • Low-priced products. The cost per meeting is too high.
  • Lists without direct dials. Calling a main switchboard and asking for “whoever handles marketing” mostly reaches receptionists. Good mobile and direct numbers are the biggest factor you control.
  • Reps who hate it. Calling is a skill, and Gong’s data showed a small group of reps getting most of the results. One rep who enjoys it will usually outperform three who are forced into it.
  • Robocalls and AI voices without consent. In February 2024 the FCC ruled that AI-generated voices count as “artificial” voices under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the same law that restricts robocalls. Live, manual B2B calls are a different category, but if a vendor pitches you an AI voice agent for outbound, check the legal side first.

How to start without wasting a quarter

  1. Pick 200 accounts that fit well, with direct numbers for the people you want.
  2. Write a two-sentence opener: who you are and the specific reason you’re calling them.
  3. Call in at least two time windows. The benchmarks disagree (Cognism found 10 to 11am best, Belkins found 3 to 4pm best), so test both with your list.
  4. Track dials, connects, conversations and meetings held. Those four numbers tell you which part is broken.
  5. Give it 3 to 4 weeks before deciding. A few hundred dials is the minimum to see a pattern.

So does cold calling still work? Yes, and for many B2B teams it’s one of the few outbound channels that isn’t getting more crowded right now. It just takes more dials than most people expect.

Frequently asked questions

Does cold calling still work in 2026?

Yes, for most B2B teams, as long as you plan around the numbers. Belkins' 2025 data from 175,000+ dials found about 370 dials per booked meeting, and Cognism's 2026 report puts the average cold call success rate at 2.7%. That is a lot of dialing, but each conversation tends to be worth more than a cold email reply, and fewer competitors are calling than emailing.

What is a good cold calling success rate?

It depends on how success is defined. Cognism reports an average success rate of 2.7% in 2026. Belkins found a 9.9% connect rate per dial and a 4.6% rate of conversations turning into meetings. Gong's older analysis of 90,380 connected calls found about 1.48% ended in a held meeting. If you book one meeting for every 200 to 400 dials, you are roughly in line with these benchmarks.

What is the best time to cold call?

The benchmarks disagree. Cognism found 10 to 11am and 2 to 3pm worked best, with Thursday the strongest day. Belkins found 3 to 4pm and around 6pm local time had the best positive outcome rates, with Wednesday the strongest day. Both agree that early morning, lunch and Friday are weaker. Test a few windows with your own list.

Is cold calling legal?

Calling businesses is generally legal in the US and Canada, but the rules depend on who you call and how. In the US, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act restricts autodialed and prerecorded calls, especially to mobile numbers, and the FCC ruled in February 2024 that AI-generated voices count as artificial voices under that law. Live, manually dialed B2B calls are the lowest-risk version. Check the rules for your country and talk to a lawyer if you plan to use autodialers or AI voice agents.

Is cold calling better than cold email?

They do different jobs. Cold email scales cheaply but averages a few percent reply rate and competes with a crowded inbox. Cold calling takes more time per prospect but gets you a live conversation. Most teams that book meetings consistently use both, with a call following an email or the other way around.
